Naivasha Virtual Fieldcourse

Alien species

Twenty-three aquatic species were introduced to Lake Naivasha since the beginning of the 20th century (Gherardi et al. 2011). Most of them are fish (tilapias, Black Bass, Common Carp, Gambusia, Catfish), some are crustaceans, such as the Red Louisiana Crayfish (Procambarus clarkii, Cambariidae) and the microscopic Water flea (Daphnia pulex, Daphniidae), few are insects, such as the weevils introduced as a means of biological control to arrest the excessive proliferation of alien floating plants (Water hyacinth, Salvinia), and there is even one mammal: the coypu (Myocastor coypus, Myocastoridae) which had been bred in captivity to produce fur.
