Lake Nakuru National Park
Lake Nakuru National Park is outside the Naivasha catchment to the north, but is included in this VFC because it was joined to Naivasha about 30,000 years ago, with the lake in between, Elmenteita, in a giant lake which outflowed to the south through wa=hat is now Hell's Gate gorge.
Nakuru is most famous for its enormous flocks of lesser flamingos (Phoeniconais minor), at time snumbering over a million birds, claimed to be "one of the greatest bird spectacles on the planet as hundreds of thousands of greater and lesser pink flamingos flock, in blankets of pink, to the water's edge to feed on the lake's algae" (National Geographic).
The lake was purchased from private ranch owners
