Lakeshore farming

Farming on the lakeshore has been banned by a voluntary agreement promoted by the Lake Naivasha Riparian Association soon after the foundation of this association. The decision came after local residents realised that, due to frequent water level changes, lakeshore farming was unpracticable and caused damage to flora and fauna within the riparian zone.

Today, lake farming is practiced despite this decision by residents living in lowcost estates such as Kihoto and Kasarani. During low-water periods, farmers are forced to hand-dig wells and irrigation canals that are filled by diesel pumps. During high water periods, a large portion of the produce becomes flooded and great part of the harvest is lost while pesticides and fertilisers are released to the lake.
